Walthers Proto 2000 No. 920-40993 is an HO scale EMD E7 Phase II A-B locomotive set decorated for the New York Central’s famous 20th Century Limited. The set pairs E7A No. 4024 with E7B No. 4108 and was factory equipped with Sound & DCC.

Proto 2000 New York Central 4024 and 4108
Walthers produced this E7 A-B pair to accompany its HO scale New York Central 20th Century Limited passenger equipment. Item 920-40993 consists of cab-equipped E7A No. 4024 and cabless E7B No. 4108.
This particular version was sold with factory-installed Sound & DCC. Walthers also produced other New York Central road-number combinations in both Sound & DCC and standard DC versions, making the road numbers especially useful when identifying a set.
EMD E7 Phase II
Electro-Motive Division’s E7 was a streamlined passenger diesel locomotive produced during the postwar transition from steam to diesel passenger power. Like other EMD E-units, the E7 used a streamlined carbody and six-wheel trucks designed for high-speed passenger service.
The E7A included a cab for the operating crew, while the E7B was a cabless booster designed to operate with other locomotives in a multiple-unit consist.
The Proto 2000 models represent Phase II E7 locomotives, incorporating details appropriate to that later version of the E7 design.
New York Central and the 20th Century Limited
The 20th Century Limited was New York Central’s premier passenger train between New York and Chicago. Its streamlined postwar equipment and gray New York Central passenger locomotives created one of the most recognizable American passenger trains of the era.
Walthers developed a series of HO scale cars and Proto 2000 E7 locomotives specifically for recreating the postwar 20th Century Limited. No. 920-40993 was one of the Sound & DCC locomotive sets offered for that series.
