Proto 2000 Union Pacific No. 933 and 939B
Walthers offered this matched A-B locomotive set while developing its HO scale Union Pacific City streamliner series. The locomotives were designed to complement Walthers passenger cars representing Union Pacific’s famous City trains.
Item No. 920-41350 paired powered A unit No. 933 with B unit No. 939B. This version came from the factory with sound and Digital Command Control.
Walthers also offered additional Union Pacific E8 road numbers in both Sound & DCC and standard DC configurations, making the road numbers and item number important when identifying a particular set.
Union Pacific City Streamliner Power
Union Pacific received its first EMD E8 passenger locomotives in 1950. The streamlined diesels joined the railroad’s expanding passenger locomotive fleet and became closely associated with Union Pacific’s City trains.
Walthers developed its Proto 2000 E8 models specifically to accompany its Union Pacific City-series passenger cars. The models include Union Pacific-specific details such as the distinctive rooftop snow shields visible on the TrainReference photograph.
Model Features
Walthers documented the Proto 2000 Union Pacific E8 series with features including:
- Factory-installed Sound & DCC on No. 920-41350
- Revised E8 body
- Union Pacific-specific prototype details
- See-through air intake grilles
- Painted metal grab irons, handrails and lift rings
- Five-pole skew-wound can motor
- Helical gearing
- Proto MAX metal knuckle couplers
- Matching Union Pacific paint and lettering
The models were designed for multiple-unit operation, appropriate for Union Pacific passenger service where several streamlined diesel units could be operated together.
Identifying Walthers No. 920-41350
The easiest way to distinguish this set from the other Union Pacific Proto 2000 E8 releases is the locomotive pairing:
- No. 933 — E8 A cab unit
- No. 939B — booster unit
Walthers cataloged that combination as 920-41350 with factory Sound & DCC.
Other releases from the same series included No. 937 with 946B as another Sound & DCC A-B set, while standard DC sets used still other road-number combinations.
