Bockholt Badische IV h No. 1013
Bockholt produced highly detailed large-scale models in Germany, including this Gauge 1 reproduction of the Badische IV h. Model-reference documentation identifies the No. 1013 version as Bockholt reference 903, produced around 1994.
The TrainReference example represents the locomotive in Badische Staatsbahn colors and carries road number 1013 on the locomotive.
The Badische IV h
The Badische IV h was an express-passenger steam locomotive developed for the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railway. The locomotives were built by J.A. Maffei of Munich in three groups between 1918 and 1920.
Twenty IV h locomotives were constructed. They used the 2’C1′ European axle arrangement, equivalent to a 4-6-2 Pacific, and had unusually large 2,100 mm driving wheels for high-speed passenger operation.
The IV h used a sophisticated four-cylinder compound engine. The inside cylinders drove the first coupled axle while the outside cylinders drove the second, an arrangement that distinguished the class from many other compound Pacific designs.
Badische Staatsbahn No. 1013
The prototype represented by this Bockholt model was Badische Staatsbahn No. 1013. Historical documentation identifies No. 1013 as a member of the final IV h production group delivered by Maffei in 1920.
Shortly after the IV h locomotives entered service, the Baden state railway became part of the newly formed German national railway system. The IV h locomotives were subsequently incorporated into the Deutsche Reichsbahn fleet as Class 18.3.
Express Passenger Service
The IV h was designed for fast passenger operation on the Rhine Valley route between Mannheim and Basel. Its large driving wheels and powerful compound machinery made it particularly suitable for sustained high-speed running on relatively level routes.
Members of the class later worked from other German depots as newer standardized steam locomotives displaced them from their original assignments. Several IV h locomotives subsequently became important high-speed test locomotives.

It remains in its original wooden box that I purchased at their factory in Germany in 1989. Never run asking price is $11,000. I am located in Western North Carolina. This is a museum piece. My father kept it under glass for its entire life. It’s a rare opportunity for a collector of rare model train engines.
