Garden Railway Company / Samhongsa UP 837
This model was produced for the Garden Railway Company and built in Korea by Samhongsa. It is a factory-painted Gauge 1 model of Union Pacific FEF-3 No. 837.
Specialist documentation identifies a production run of 66 examples of the No. 837 model. Surviving examples carry individual production numbers, although the serial number of the TrainReference example is not visible in the available photographs.

The Samhongsa model was engineered as an operating electric locomotive rather than solely as a static display piece. Documented features include:

Union Pacific FEF-3 No. 837
The prototype represented by the model was one of Union Pacific’s famous FEF-series 4-8-4 steam locomotives. The designation FEF came from “four-eight-four,” Union Pacific’s classification for its Northern-type locomotives.
No. 837 belonged to the final FEF-3 group, Nos. 835 through 844. These locomotives were built by the American Locomotive Company for Union Pacific in 1944.
The FEF locomotives were designed for high-speed passenger service but were capable of handling demanding assignments across the Union Pacific system. They became some of the railroad’s best-known steam locomotives.
Two-Tone Gray Passenger Appearance
The Samhongsa model represents No. 837 in Union Pacific’s distinctive two-tone gray passenger-era paint scheme, with yellow striping and lettering.
The TrainReference photographs show the finish particularly well on the large tender, where the gray body, yellow striping and UNION PACIFIC lettering are clearly visible.
A Large Gauge 1 Model
At 1:32 scale, the model is dramatically larger than typical HO or O scale locomotives. The original TrainReference description records a weight of approximately 37 pounds and an overall locomotive-and-tender length of approximately 43 inches.
Other documented examples list the locomotive at roughly 26 inches and the tender at approximately 18 inches, consistent with the dimensions recorded for the TrainReference model.
