Lionel 003 OO Gauge Hudson – Two-Rail Prewar

The Lionel No. 003 Hudson is the super-detailed two-rail version of Lionel’s small prewar OO gauge New York Central Hudson. Introduced during Lionel’s late-1930s move toward more realistic scale trains, the 003 combined unusually detailed die-cast construction with two-rail operation in a model only about nine inches long.

The locomotive photographed for TrainReference is marked No. 003 and is accompanied by a black Lionel OO tender.

Lionel’s Prewar OO Gauge Trains

Lionel introduced OO gauge as part of its late-prewar effort to offer smaller trains with realistic proportions and detail. The line was dramatically smaller than Lionel’s O and Standard Gauge equipment while retaining substantial die-cast construction.

Lionel based its OO steam locomotive line on the New York Central Hudson. The locomotives carried the road number 5342 on the cab, but Lionel offered several catalog versions for different track systems and levels of detail.

The OO line included both two-rail and three-rail track, an unusual distinction that is important when identifying surviving Lionel OO equipment today.

Understanding the 001, 002, 003 and 004 Hudsons

Lionel produced four principal versions of its OO Hudson:

  • No. 001: Super-detailed locomotive for three-rail track
  • No. 002: Modified or semi-scale locomotive for three-rail track
  • No. 003: Super-detailed locomotive for two-rail track
  • No. 004: Modified or semi-scale locomotive for two-rail track

The locomotive shown here is therefore identified as a No. 003: the super-detailed, two-rail version.

Part and casting numbers can cause confusion when identifying these locomotives. Components shared among different versions may carry markings derived from another model number, while the actual locomotive catalog number may be stamped elsewhere. The cab number 5342 identifies the New York Central prototype represented by the model rather than Lionel’s catalog number.

The No. 003 and Its Tender

Lionel offered the No. 003 with two tender configurations. The 003T was the non-whistle tender, while the 003W incorporated Lionel’s remote-control whistle.

Period advertising identifies the whistle-equipped No. 003 and 003W as the locomotive and tender used in Lionel’s No. 0090W two-rail super-detailed freight outfit. That train also included a Pennsylvania boxcar, oil car, coal hopper and New York Central caboose.

The corresponding No. 0090 outfit used the same super-detailed two-rail locomotive but substituted the non-whistle 003T tender.

Scale Detail in a Small Locomotive

The 003 is notable for the amount of detail Lionel incorporated into such a small prewar locomotive. The die-cast Hudson includes separate exterior details and a full 4-6-4 wheel arrangement while retaining the weight and substantial construction associated with Lionel’s larger trains.

The TrainReference example also provides a useful underside view showing the locomotive’s markings and running gear. These details can be particularly helpful when distinguishing a two-rail 003 from other Lionel OO Hudson versions.

Bought mine from E Bay. It’s a beauty. I don’t understand though as to why Lionel went to all the trouble to make it so detailed and realistic but make the main driving wheels “solid” rather then “spoked”. Other than that I did wish it cake with a base like it’s “O” gauge counterpart!

I made my own for it!
