The Lionel 384E is a large Standard Gauge electric-outline locomotive from Lionel’s prewar era. The black example photographed here survives with considerable evidence of use, making it an interesting look at one of Lionel’s substantial early-1930s locomotives.

The Lionel 384E
The No. 384E belongs to Lionel’s prewar Standard Gauge line, when the company’s largest trains were substantial sheet-metal toys designed for Lionel’s wide three-rail track. These trains predate the more scale-oriented locomotives Lionel introduced later in the 1930s.
The 384E is an electric-outline locomotive rather than a model of a steam locomotive. Its long body, end platforms, large driving wheels and roof-mounted electrical details give it the imposing appearance associated with Lionel’s larger Standard Gauge equipment.
Train Collectors Association research documents the 384E in several Lionel outfits. One particularly interesting example is promotional outfit PO 94, which combined a black 384E and No. 384T tender with Mojave-colored No. 309, 310 and 312 passenger cars. TCA research into Lionel export sets also records the 384E with a 384T tender.
384 and 384E
Lionel used both 384 and 384E designations. The “E” designation identified a locomotive equipped with Lionel’s electrically controlled reversing equipment, allowing direction to be changed through electrical operation rather than relying only on a manual reversing arrangement.
Because prewar Lionel locomotives can survive with replacement parts, repainted bodies or mechanical repairs accumulated over many decades, identifying a particular 384E should include examination of its finish, trim, electrical equipment, frame and underside markings.
Details on This Example
The black 384E photographed for TrainReference shows substantial wear from age and use. That wear also leaves many of its construction details visible.
The underside carries Lionel’s “Standard” BILD-A-LOCO identification along with operating and lubrication information. The locomotive has two large driving wheels on each side, for a total of four driving wheels.
The underside photographs are particularly useful when comparing another locomotive with this example because they show the frame, wheel arrangement, motor area and surviving factory markings rather than only the exterior body.
