The Lionel Southern Pacific Cab Forward No. 4294, product No. 6-38071, is a scale O Gauge model of Southern Pacific’s distinctive AC-12 class 4-8-8-2 articulated steam locomotive. Equipped with TrainMaster Command Control, RailSounds and Lionel’s Odyssey speed-control system, the massive locomotive and tender span approximately 33 inches and weigh nearly 16 pounds.
Lionel modeled a particularly significant prototype: Southern Pacific No. 4294 was the final AC-12 built and is the only surviving Southern Pacific Cab Forward locomotive.

Southern Pacific’s Cab Forward
Southern Pacific’s Cab Forward locomotives reversed the conventional steam-locomotive arrangement by placing the cab at the front of the locomotive and the smokebox toward the tender.
The unusual configuration had a practical purpose. Southern Pacific operated through numerous tunnels and long snowsheds on its mountain routes, where exhaust from conventional steam locomotives could create dangerous conditions for engine crews. Moving the cab ahead of the boiler placed the engineer and fireman in front of the locomotive’s exhaust while also providing excellent forward visibility.
The use of oil rather than coal made the arrangement practical because fuel could be piped forward from the tender instead of requiring a fireman to shovel coal from a tender behind the cab.
The Prototype: Southern Pacific No. 4294
The prototype represented by Lionel’s model is Southern Pacific No. 4294, a 4-8-8-2 articulated locomotive of the railroad’s AC-12 class.
Baldwin Locomotive Works built No. 4294 in March 1944. It was the last of 20 AC-12 locomotives and the final example in Southern Pacific’s long development of the Cab Forward design.
No. 4294 is especially important today because it is the only surviving Southern Pacific Cab Forward. The locomotive is preserved on indoor display at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.
Lionel No. 6-38071
Lionel reproduced No. 4294 as a large scale-proportioned O Gauge locomotive. The engine and tender together span approximately 33 inches and weigh nearly 16 pounds, with the locomotive itself accounting for more than 11 pounds.
The model requires O-72 or broader curves, reflecting both its length and articulated running gear.
The locomotive uses a high-torque Pittman motor with a momentum flywheel and Lionel’s Odyssey speed-control system. Odyssey can be switched on or off depending on the desired operating mode.
TMCC, RailSounds and Odyssey
The 4294 is equipped with Lionel’s TrainMaster Command Control system for command operation. Its RailSounds system provides synchronized locomotive sounds along with CrewTalk and TowerCom features when operated in TMCC mode.
Two speakers are mounted in the tender. Communication between the locomotive and tender uses Lionel’s wireless infrared tether rather than a conventional multi-wire electrical tether.
The tender also has a rear operating ElectroCoupler that can be activated during TMCC operation.
Smoke and Lighting
A synchronized fan-driven smoke system supplies the locomotive’s dual stacks. Smoke output is adjustable.
Lighting details include the locomotive headlight, classification lights and tender backup light. The tender also carries illuminated marker lights with rear- and side-facing red lenses.
Scale Details
Lionel fitted the Cab Forward with an unusually extensive collection of separately applied details. Among the features visible on the TrainReference example are:
- Detailed drive rods and articulated running gear
- Metal handrails, steps and boiler-side walkways
- Fine piping, valves, compressors and related appliances
- Brass whistle and locomotive data plates
- Opening cab-side doors
- Opening cab-top vent
- Detailed cab interior with engineer and fireman figures
- Painted interior valve wheels and instrument faces
- Air hoses with painted connector details
The tender is similarly detailed. Its four water doors open, while the removable coal-load insert provides access to modeled coal-auger detail beneath it. Handrails, ladders, lettering and small brass plates further reproduce features of the Southern Pacific tender.

The key identifier for this model is Lionel product number 6-38071, paired with Southern Pacific road number 4294.
Because numerous manufacturers have produced Southern Pacific Cab Forward models in different scales and Lionel itself has offered Cab Forward locomotives in different configurations, the product number is more useful for identifying this particular release than the road number alone.
