Rivarossi/AHM Illinois Central 382
Rivarossi produced this large O-gauge reproduction of Illinois Central No. 382 for AHM. Contemporary and collector documentation identifies the model as reference 7201, an O-gauge ready-to-run 4-6-0 locomotive and tender.
This should not be confused with Rivarossi’s much smaller HO-scale Casey Jones No. 382. Rivarossi produced versions of this famous locomotive in more than one scale. The TrainReference example is the O-gauge 2-rail model.
The Real Illinois Central No. 382
Illinois Central No. 382 was a coal-fired 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler built by the Rogers Locomotive Works in 1898. Its Rogers construction number was 5292.
The locomotive was part of an Illinois Central group intended for fast passenger service and became famous through its association with engineer John Luther “Casey” Jones.
Casey Jones and the 1900 Vaughan Wreck
On April 30, 1900, Casey Jones was operating Illinois Central No. 382 south from Memphis toward Canton, Mississippi. Near Vaughan, Mississippi, the passenger train encountered freight equipment obstructing the main line.
Jones applied the brakes and attempted to stop the train but No. 382 collided with the freight cars. Jones was killed in the wreck, while his actions before the collision became part of American railroad history and folklore.
The accident made both Casey Jones and locomotive No. 382 enduring symbols of the steam-railroad era.
What Happened to No. 382?
The original locomotive was not destroyed in the 1900 wreck. Illinois Central repaired No. 382 and returned it to service.
During its later career the locomotive carried several different Illinois Central numbers, including 212, 2012 and 5012. It remained in service for decades before eventually being retired and scrapped.
As a result, surviving locomotives displayed today as Casey Jones’ No. 382 are representations of the historic locomotive rather than the original engine.
Identifying the Rivarossi O-Gauge Model
The TrainReference example can be identified by the following characteristics:
- Rivarossi manufacture for AHM
- Reference 7201
- O-gauge 2-rail construction
- Illinois Central Railroad lettering
- Road number 382
- 4-6-0 wheel arrangement
- Separate locomotive and tender
- Black steam-locomotive finish
The model represents the famous Casey Jones locomotive rather than a generic Illinois Central Ten-Wheeler.
Rivarossi HO and O Gauge Versions
Collectors should be aware that Rivarossi produced Illinois Central No. 382 in both HO and O gauge. The two models can therefore be confused in listings and reference material when the scale is not stated.
The model documented on this page is the considerably larger O-gauge 2-rail Rivarossi/AHM reference 7201. Rivarossi’s HO-scale No. 382 was a separate product.
