What Is a Forney Locomotive?
A Forney is a tank locomotive design associated with engineer Matthias N. Forney. Instead of pulling a separate tender, the locomotive carries its fuel and water on the locomotive itself.
The arrangement became particularly useful on railroads where compact dimensions and the ability to operate effectively in either direction were valuable. Forney locomotives became especially well known on American narrow-gauge railroads.
2-4-4 Wheel Arrangement
The Bachmann model uses a 2-4-4 arrangement: two leading wheels, four coupled driving wheels and four trailing wheels supporting the rear of the locomotive.
Item 80998 is particularly recognizable by its outside-frame construction, with portions of the driving mechanism positioned outside the wheels. This gives the model a substantially different appearance from Bachmann’s inside-frame Forney variants.
