Overland Models OMI-0195.1

The original Overland Models identification card photographed by TrainReference provides unusually complete documentation for this model. It identifies the locomotive as an NP W-5 2-8-2 with long tender, factory paint and lights, road number 1844, catalog number OMI-0195.1, in O scale.

Model Features

The Overland W-5 is a highly detailed operating brass locomotive. Features visible in the original TrainReference photographs or documented with the model include:

  • Factory-painted brass construction
  • Long Northern Pacific tender
  • Operating locomotive headlight
  • Operating tender backup light
  • Detailed running gear and valve gear
  • Opening cab roof vents
  • Opening tender water hatch
  • Opening doghouse door
  • Detailed cab and boiler fittings
  • Tender prepared for installation of a sound system

The close-up photographs are particularly useful for documenting the model’s separately applied piping, handrails, running gear and tender details.

Northern Pacific Class W-5

Northern Pacific’s W-5 class consisted of 25 2-8-2 Mikado locomotives, Nos. 1835 through 1859. They were built by the American Locomotive Company’s Schenectady works in 1923. The W-5 was the final class in Northern Pacific’s large family of 2-8-2 steam locomotives.

The W-5 locomotives were powerful freight engines and remained in Northern Pacific service for decades. Historical photographs document them handling freight trains and helper assignments across the railroad.

Northern Pacific No. 1844

The prototype represented by this model, Northern Pacific No. 1844, is particularly well documented in surviving railroad photography. Historical images show the locomotive at locations including Livingston, Missoula, Tacoma and Muir.

No. 1844 also became associated with a notable long-distance freight run during the 1920s. Historical archives document the locomotive making an extended run from the Pacific Northwest toward St. Paul without the train being uncoupled or the locomotive being changed, demonstrating the endurance of Northern Pacific’s W-5 design.

Later photographs show No. 1844 continuing in regular freight and helper service into the 1930s and 1940s.
