Lionel’s Wabash F3
Lionel introduced the No. 2367 Wabash during its 1955 redesign of the F3 line. The newer F3 mechanism used vertically mounted motors, and the 2300-series locomotives such as the 2367 received two motors for strong pulling power.
The 2367 was sold as an A-B combination. The powered A unit contained two vertical worm-drive motors with Magnetraction, a three-position reversing unit and an operating horn. It also featured an illuminated headlight and number boards. The front coupler of the A unit operated, while the other couplers were non-operating.
Lionel offered the Wabash F3 separately and also used it to head both passenger and freight sets during 1955.
Wabash Colors and Identification
The 2367 is easily recognized by its blue, gray and white Wabash decoration. The body has a gray roof and upper section, blue sides, a narrow white stripe through the middle and a broad white lower band. Yellow Wabash lettering appears on the sides, with a Wabash herald on the nose of the A unit.
Both units use molded louvered roof ventilators and closed side portholes. The 1955 shell also has raised molded cab-door ladder detail, a feature associated with Lionel’s F3 tooling from this production period.
Train Collectors Association documentation identifies another useful detail on Lionel F3 shells produced from 1955 through 1957: a tiny molding nick near the cab. This manufacturing characteristic can help when evaluating whether a shell is consistent with original postwar production.
2367 B-Unit Variations
Collector documentation identifies variations in the lettering of the non-powered B unit. On one version, the yellow lettering and the small “BUILT BY LIONEL” marking were heat-stamped, with the latter appearing at opposite ends on the two sides of the shell.
An earlier variation uses rubber-stamped lettering on the B unit, with “BUILT BY LIONEL” positioned at the same end on both sides. Because decoration can be altered during restoration, lettering method and placement are useful details to examine when identifying an original 2367.
